Sept. 17, 2020, 3:56 p.m.

Guwahati: Where there is will there is a way – the proverb rightly fits the 100-year-old grandma from Guwahati, Assam as she, with her firm will power and positivity defeated COVID-19.

Mai Handique was the oldest COVID-19 patient from Assam to be discharged after winning her battle against the deadly virus She was admitted to the Mahendra Mohan Chowdhury Hospital (MMCH) in Guwahat ten days ago after infecting the virus.

One of the doctors was worried about her age and hypertension. Talking about the same, he said,” Initially, we were worried due to her age and she also has hypertension, but she was always cheerful and in a positive frame of mind.”

Handique was called Aita (grandma) by all the members at the hospital and was treated with utmost love and care.

After her recovery, she told reporters,” We were given fish or meat on most of the days while egg and banana were given daily. We were also given ‘ruti- bhaji’ (chappatis and vegetables) which I enjoyed the most.” she even showed gratitude by thanking the staff at the hospital “The girls (the nurses) and the doctors took very good care.”

She even had high praises for the Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as she said,” “He is doing very hard work for all of us and I bless him to continue to help people who are suffering from this disease.” Sarma, too, wished her on the recovery. As she gets back to Mother’s Old Age Home, Hatigaon, Guwahati, I join my team in wishing her the best.”

In response to the statement delivered by Aita ( called grandma in English), the health minister took to twitter and said,” Steely resolve of 100-year old Mai Handique is monumental. With brilliant support of doctors at MMCH, she defeated coronavirus, giving us a lesson in having the right will power.”

It is reported that 12 members of the  Mothers’ Old Age Home were diagnosed positive for covid-19, out of which 5 have been discharged and 7 are getting treated at the hospital.
